The water filter pitcher is a very popular choice nowadays as far as home water filter systems go. It is a very inexpensive system and there are basically two main brands that are people mostly buying: the PUR and Brita.

Truth be said, the PUR brand is recommended more than any other system on the market today. It uses a carbon filter that reduces sediments and chlorine and it has a second filtering agent which reduces the lead and copper. The water tastes great and many laboratories rank it quite high for removing various contaminants from the water. It removes apparently up to 21 contaminants making the water very healthy to drink.

However the PUR water system has a slower flow rate and a somewhat faster clogging of the filter. Basically the way it filters the water it takes a bit longer for the liquid to drip through the filter. Because it has a longer contact with the filter, the water is purer, but this slows down the dripping making it take a bit longer until the water is ready to drink. Also the filter has a relative short life span because of the extra clogging, so this is why this particular brand is relatively expensive when you take into account the actual filter replacement.

Brita is another very popular brand of water filter pitcher. This fares better in filter shelf life and flow rate, which means that in the long term you might save a buck or two more than using the PUR brand. This removes successfully chlorine, lead, copper, benzene and mercury and it improves the odor and taste of the water. However, unlike the PUR counterpart, this does not reduce cysts including giardia and cryptosporidium. On the plus side, the cartridges are recyclable.

Another very popular pitcher is the Clear2O Original Water Pitcher which has a faster water filtering. This is because it uses pressure from the faucet to push the water through the carbon filter. It is quite a complex water filter system but once learned, it is really effective and fast. This brand actually earned the Good Housekeeping Best Buy award at one time.

ZeroWater Pitcher is also a known water filter pitcher and they also recycle their filters. IT is not expensive at all, so it can be used as an effective water filter system as well. Nevertheless it seems that currently nothing beats the PUR and the Brita brands by far in efficiency, performance and water purification quality.
